I'm tickled to have the Rose and the Magician's Mask Blog Tour stopping by today with my review, a guest post, and giveaway! Be sure to check out my reviews of book one and book two...

Rose and the Magician's Mask
(Rose #3)
by Holly Webb
9/2/14
Sourcebooks Jabberwocky

Rose is now a fully fledged magician's apprentice-will her new magic be enough to find the dangerous magician's mask?

When a precious mask of unimaginable power is stolen from the royal palace, Rose suspects that dark magicians are at work and that danger looms. The race to stop the evil thieves will take Rose to the mysterious city of Venice, where nothing is quite what it seems. Can Rose use her magic to find the terrible mask before its true powers are revealed?

Holly Webb returns to her magical middle-grade Rose series with book three, Rose and the Magician’s Mask. Now a full fledged magician’s apprentice and after her daring adventures to protect Princess Jane, Rose is gaining more confidence in her magical abilities. But when an old foe returns and steals a dangerous and valuable magical mask, Rose finds herself in the mysterious city of Venice. Rose and her ever faithful companions must find the magician’s mask before its captor gains too much power.

Like the other two books in this series, Rose and the Magician’s Mask is full of wonderful whimsy, enthralling magic, compelling characters, and charming writing! With dazzling thrills, fun mystery, and sparkling storytelling, the Rose series is guaranteed to captivate and entertain young readers greatly. From talking cats and dolls, to healing spells, magical masks, invisibility, and so much more, Webb spins an enchanting tale with each new addition to this series. I’ve really enjoyed Rose’s journey from mere orphan to maid to powerful magician and find myself completely addicted to each new adventure. Younger readers will be spellbound by the fantasy elements, amused by the humor and whimsy, fascinated with the various historical and magical settings, and thrilled by the mystery adventure in Rose and the Magician’s Mask (as well as books one and two!).

Webb does a great job of mixing the historical with the fantastical, the age-appropriate scares with the fanciful, and the predictable with the twists. I’ve come to really love sweet, determined Rose and her quirky friends. We get to know each character a little better in each new book and in Rose and the Magician’s Mask each character is given a chance to really shine. And I still have a soft spot for snarky Gus (the talking cat) and spoiled, funny Bella.

Grand, mysterious Venice makes for a delightful, yet deliciously spine-tingly setting. In Rose and the Magician’s Mask, both Rose and readers will find themselves traversing this watery city, attending masquerade balls and thwarting baddies. Like previous books in this series, book three wraps up one mystery and excitingly sets up another one...and I can’t wait for more!

My Final Thoughts: Rose and the Magician’s Mask is another fun, enchanting addition to a magical, sparkling series for young readers. Holly Web dazzles, amuses, and ignites the imagination!

MY RATING

Magical Powers I’d like to have
by Holly Webb
1. When I was younger I had a recurring dream (I still have it occasionally) that I could jump down a certain staircase in my parents’ house – just jump straight from the top, and almost float down. I’d love to be able to do that for real!
2. I’d love to be able to talk to animals – and understand them. At the moment, our newest kitten would probably tell me how much she hates me – she’s just been spayed (an operation so she can’t have kittens) and she’s wearing a little vest to stop her eating her stitches. She hates it – I think I’d probably learn kitten bad language…
3. Some kind of time-stretching spell – this would be very useful for when deadlines are approaching…
4. An anti-forgetfulness charm, so we wouldn’t get halfway to school and find that someone’s forgotten their recorder/swimming kit/lunch!
5. Emergency chocolate magic. Because just occasionally, there’s no chocolate in the house when you really, really need it… For inspirational purposes only, of course.

Holly was born and grew up in south-east London, but spent a lot of time on the Suffolk coast. As a child, she had two dogs, a cat, and at one point, nine gerbils (an accident). At about ten, Holly fell in love with stories from Ancient Greek myths, which led to studying Latin and Greek, and eventually to reading Classics at university. She worked for five years as a children's fiction editor, before deciding that writing was more fun, and easier to do from a sofa. Now living in Reading with her husband, three sons and one cat, Holly runs a Guide unit. The Rose books stem from a childhood love of historical novels, and the wish that animals really could talk.
